Note to Nova Scotia PCs: Those who live in glass houses….

Despite the fact that I was somewhat critical of the NDP and their platform in a recent post, I feel somewhat compelled to come to their defence on a specific issue, due to the shear idiocy of the argument in question.

Whoever is running the “RiskyNDP” account posted the following on Twitter:
“Fact #1: NDP essentially bankrupted Ontario and BC.”
While I’m not sure if the Twitter account is affiliated with the actual party, this isn’t really a new talking point. It will inevitably pop up on Tory blogs, or will be posted by their supporters online to somehow discredit their opponent by claiming NDP (or Liberal) parties across the country are responsible for policies enacted by different parties, in different times, in different places, by different people.

The Nova Scotia PCs should be somewhat wary about traveling down this road, least someone with access to “The Google” and knowledge of some fairly poor choices by other PC parties turn the tables on them. Take this for example:
Don Getty was the PC Premier of Alberta from 1985-1992. During this period, Alberta’s Debt rose by $18 Billion, and taxes were raised and programs were cut.
Using the logic of the good people at RiskyNDP, it is thus evident that should Rodney MacDonald be reelected, Nova Scotia will face a multi-billion dollar deficits, and substantial increases in taxes. Attacks such as these say nothing more than "I haven't read their platform, I don't know what I'm talking about, so I'll try to engage in ad hominem attacks to cover my own shortcommings".

Of course such comments also ignore the sterling economic track records of NDP governments in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where they have keep running balanced budgets while still delivering great services like public auto insurance and such. Also, you never hear how that "nasty socialist" Tommy Douglas not only had balanced books for 16 straight years, but did it while starting Medicare, many crown businesses and did it all paying off their entire provinces debt. But hey, that wouldn't play into that storyline of the "scary NDP" ;)

Be careful... the argument that "The NDP did well in Saskatchewan and Manitoba" is simply the reverse of "They did poorly in Ontario and BC". Different time, different place, different people, different parties.

Granted, but it decimates the smear. Not only is it irrelevant -- NS is not ON nor BC -- but it's also one-sided -- MB and SK did just fine with NDP governments.
